New Large Aircraft Needs Prompt Synthetic Turf Installation
As a means to control erosion and foreign object debris (FOD), the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) contracted AvTurf to install 55,000 square feet of artificial turf at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in April 2007. This was the first AvTurf installation under the new controlling ownership of industry veteran Joe Dobson.

Anticipating the arrival of the A380, the PANYNJ opted to install artificial turf to minimize the erosion caused by the jumbo jet and other new large aircraft utilizing the Runway Safety Area (RSA) adjacent to intersecting runways 22R-4L and 13R-31L. This RSA serves as a rotation point for heavy aircraft, and inevitably grit and other debris would be blown onto the intersecting runway during takeoff runs. The AvTurf installation has minimized runway closures that were previously necessary to clean up debris left behind from the airport’s natural groundcover.

In addition, the Port Authority is utilizing AvTurf’s artificial turf to combat drainage problems, mitigate wildlife management, and minimize required RSA maintenance in a plot of AvTurf running along runway 13R-31L to taxiway KA. The PANYNJ has plans to utilize AvTurf for similar uses in future installations.

Installation Locations:
Intersecting Runways 22R-4L and 13R-31L
