Difficult Maintenance Area Turns to Turf to Solve Problem
The Maryland Aviation Administration (MAA) contracted AvTurf to install the artificial turf as a means to reduce maintenance. Since the installation is located in the area of two intersecting runways, it was very difficult for the airport to shut down both runways in order to maintain the grass installation. AvTurf’s solution allows BWI to bypass many measures necessary to upkeep natural grass. In June of 2008 AvTurf installed 27,150 square feet of its CA1201 product at Runway 15R/33L and Runway 10/28.
BWI Marshall Airport has not experienced a significant downturn in traffic volume, owing mostly to the presence of two major low cost, competitive airlines – Southwest and Air Tran. In fact, the airport is as busy as ever, making the installation of AvTurf a wise and cost effective decision.

In order to show off the drainage characteristics of the artificial turf MAA conducted independent water runoff tests. These tests were conducted approximately two weeks after installation of the artificial turf surface. At the point where the 2,000 gallons of water were being dispensed, water flow was substantial. The water flowed freely and covered a wide area, where it immediately began to filtrate through the synthetic turf.

For a short period of time there was noticeable surface water, and the synthetic fibers were moist, also. As the water drained, complete absorption occurred where the water had initially been dispensed. Within 30 minutes the surface of the artificial turf was dry to the touch.

Testimonial
“[I]mmediately upon installation of AvTurf we were able to cease mowing...This is the main reason we chose this area for AvTurf. It’s very difficult to gain access to a runway intersection environment without creating significant disruption to air traffic, unless, of course, you do everything at night. But even then your opportunities are limited.”
