A Myriad of Solutions In conjunction with the ongoing airport improvements at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, airport personnel decided to evaluate artificial turf as a solution for erosion, wildlife mitigation, reduced maintenance, and visual enhancement. AvTurf was contracted by the world’s busiest airport to install approximately 2,700 square feet of artificial turf near ATL’s new fifth runway in the spring of 2006. AvTurf’s patented artificial turf is now adjacent to a retaining wall that runs parallel to Runway 10/28. The Eastern most point of the turf installation is located near Taxiway SG16, and approximately 150 feet separates Runway 10/28 and the Northern side of the artificial turf. With dimensions of approximately 18’ x 150’, the artificial turf is trenched and buried along the northern, eastern, and western sides and is attached to a header board system along the southern side of the turf.
